So, I try to be fair. Before Andre and I were married, I tried my darnest to educate him about the many wonderful attributes of Ellen. One of which is not luck. Most often displayed in the choosing of the correct grocery store line.
As an example, while checking out at a wildly popular store that my phone often changes with autocorrect to an oddly appropriate "walnast," I once again chose the wrong line. Noticing that all the registers (of which there were few), all had about the same amount of people in line. These people had, on average, the same amount of goods in their cart and none looked to be the secret troublemakers they are. So, going with my gut, I chose. Wrongly.
After waiting 15-20 minutes in line, and still with one person ahead of me, the problem at the register came: the lady did not have the money to pay. Now, if it was as I suspect and she didn't have an ID to match her card, then bravo store (As our credit was stolen a month ago for a pricey sum, I am all about checking pictures/signatures with cards, as they legally ought to). If it was another problem...well, it didn't really matter at that point as I was already heavily regretting my choice of lines. The cashier solved the problem by making everyone in line move to other lines, thus effectively doubling my wait time. Late at night. When my tiredness sets my cranky mood. Needless to say, I don't think the time I paid in there for 3 cans of tennis balls and a pack of gun was worth it. I didn't even get any photos to upload to People of Walmart.
Now, this (oftentimes humorous, after the fact) bad luck extends to other aspects of my life but little did I expect it to come into play on our honeymoon.
Andre and I had the brilliant idea of taking a cruise from Baltimore to the Bahamas. Yay for sun and beaches! It honestly was a really fun experience, with just a few hiccups:
Our first stop was Cape Canaveral in Florida, where we rented a Mustang convertible (with me as the driver since Andre has not yet hit the magical age of 25). As I am an avid Harry Potter fan and Andre just wanted a wand, we got tickets to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios. Let me just say, it was great! We loved the setup and the rides were great.

We arrived back at the pier to reenter the ship right on time, only to find a line of practically all of the ship's passengers. Turns out, while a storm raged nearby, a 70mph gust of wind broke a line connecting the gangplank to the ship. Scary but no one was injured. The ship dropped anchor, following procedures, but was unable to board us until they could tie back up to dock. They then proceeded to bus us to a different terminal and back in the two hour wait to climb back aboard. Compensated for our time with a bottled water, we headed to our room. Strike one lady luck.
Only to find out the next morning that our highly anticipated stop at Nassau was cancelled. Strike 2. The ship hadn't left Florida until after 6am and decided that we would just continue on to Freeport. Once there, we jumped ship at 7am to head to our fabulous kayaking and snorkeling tour, only to find out that it too had been cancelled. Strike 3. We just couldn't catch any luck with riding on those beautiful blue Bahamian waves.
To be honest, we did manage to have a ton of fun despite the mishaps. We were able to eat for free at the ship's steakhouse and have a romantic and delicious meal. We watched a newlywed game live and assured ourselves that we would have won. We discovered and ate the Bahamas native food: conch and mac and cheese (no joke. We asked a native). We kayaked instead in a mangrove inlet from the ocean and had lunch at a private (and cold) beach.
And for the record, though lady luck and I continue to have our difficulties, Andre's got a good rap for her. Maybe it will rub off. Maybe.
Still sounds amazing to me! But I will never ask you to pick lottery numbers for me, should I ever play the lottery.
ReplyDeleteHaha I've already done that for my mother and I bet you can guess the outcome.
